Information We Collect
We collect only what the Site needs in order to work, and only what you choose to share with us. There is no form on this Site that asks for more than a few details, and we keep that footprint deliberately small.
Information you give us
- Your email address. Provided when you subscribe to our newsletter, The Archive, or when you sign in. The Site uses passwordless, magic-link sign-in, so your email is the credential we send a one-time link to. We do not ask you to create or store a password.
- An optional profile. If you create an account you may add a display name so your activity reads as yours rather than as an anonymous visitor. This is optional and you control it.
- Content you contribute. Comments you leave and the likes you place on films and photographs. This user-generated content is stored alongside your account so it can be shown back to you and to others.
Information collected automatically
When you visit, our hosting and service providers record basic technical data such as your IP address, browser type, device type, and the pages you view. This is standard server and log information used to keep the Site secure and running well. It is not used to build an advertising profile of you.
We do not collect payment information of any kind through this Site. No card numbers, no billing details, nothing of that nature passes through these pages.
How We Use Your Information
We use the information above for a short, defined set of purposes, all of which are about operating the Site and the experience you came here for:
- To sign you in securely by sending a magic link to your email address.
- To deliver The Archive newsletter to subscribers, and to honor an unsubscribe the moment you ask.
- To save and display your comments, likes, and display name as part of the community features.
- To keep your session active so you stay signed in across visits, and to remember your light or dark theme preference.
- To keep the Site secure, diagnose problems, prevent abuse, and understand in aggregate how the Site is used so we can improve it.
We do not use your contact information for unrelated marketing, and we do not add you to any list you did not ask to join. Newsletter email and sign-in email are separate consents: subscribing to The Archive is its own choice.

Why We Collect It
Where the law requires us to name a basis for handling your information, we rely on a small number of clear ones, matched to what we are actually doing.
- Performing a service you asked for. Signing you in, keeping you signed in, and saving your contributions are all things you set in motion by choosing to use them.
- Your consent. Receiving The Archive newsletter rests on the consent you give when you subscribe. You can withdraw it at any time, and withdrawing it does not affect anything we did lawfully before.
- Our legitimate interests. Keeping the Site secure, preventing abuse, remembering your preferences, and understanding aggregate usage are interests we balance against your rights, kept narrow and non-intrusive.
- Legal obligation. On the rare occasion the law requires it, we may process information to comply.

Data Storage & Security
This Site is a static site. It has no traditional back-end server of its own. Instead, it talks directly to Supabase using the Supabase JavaScript client in your browser. Supabase provides managed Postgres for the database and handles authentication, and it acts as our data processor: it stores and secures data on our behalf, under our instructions.
Your account details, display name, comments, and likes live in that Supabase database. Sign-in is handled by Supabase authentication, which is what issues and validates the magic links and keeps your session.
We protect your information with reasonable, industry-standard measures: data is transmitted over encrypted connections, access to the database is restricted, and we store only what the features genuinely require. No method of transmission or storage is ever perfectly secure, so while we work to protect your information, we cannot guarantee absolute security.
Cookies & Local Storage
The Site uses cookies and your browser's local storage for essential purposes only. There are exactly two things we keep:
- Your sign-in session. The Supabase authentication session is stored so that you stay signed in between page loads and visits without re-requesting a magic link each time.
- Your theme preference. Whether you chose light or dark is remembered so the Site opens the way you left it.
We do not use advertising cookies, retargeting pixels, social trackers, or any third-party tracking technology. Our analytics provider, Plausible, is cookieless by design and collects no personal data. You can clear cookies and local storage at any time through your browser settings, though doing so will sign you out and reset your saved theme.
Sharing & Disclosure
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for anyone else's advertising or marketing. There is no exchange of your data for money or for value of any kind.
The only parties that handle your information are the service providers that make the Site function, acting on our behalf as processors: Supabase, which stores your data and runs authentication, and our hosting and analytics providers, which keep the Site online and measure aggregate usage. They may process your information only to deliver those services to us.
We may disclose information if the law requires it, such as in response to a valid legal request, or where it is necessary to protect the rights, safety, or property of our visitors or of David Couser. Outside of that, your information stays where you put it.
Your Rights & Choices
The information is yours, and you have meaningful control over it. Depending on where you live, you may have the right to:
- Access a copy of the personal information we hold about you.
- Correct information that is inaccurate or out of date, including your display name.
- Delete your account and the content tied to it.
- Export your data in a portable form.
- Unsubscribe from The Archive at any time, either from the link in any newsletter or by request.
To make any of these requests, please use the on-site Feedback page. We will respond within a reasonable timeframe and in accordance with applicable law. Exercising these rights will never cost you anything or cause us to treat you differently.
Data Retention
We keep personal information only for as long as it is needed for the purpose it was collected, and no longer. While your account is active, we retain your profile, comments, and likes so the Site works as you expect.
If you ask us to delete your account, we remove your personal information and associated content, except for anything we are required to keep for a limited period to meet a legal obligation or to resolve disputes. Newsletter records are kept only while you remain subscribed, and are removed on unsubscribe. Basic server logs are retained for a short window for security and diagnostics, then discarded or anonymized.
Third Party Services
A small number of trusted providers help operate the Site. Each has its own privacy practices, which we encourage you to review:
- Supabase, managed Postgres database, authentication, and storage for accounts, comments, and likes. See Supabase's Privacy Policy.
- Plausible Analytics, privacy-friendly, cookieless traffic measurement that collects no personal data. See Plausible's data policy.
- Our static hosting provider, which serves these pages and records standard access logs.
These providers process information only to deliver their service to us. David Couser is not responsible for the independent practices of any third-party platform you choose to visit from a link on this Site.
Children's Privacy
This Site is intended for a general, adult audience and is not directed to children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
If you believe a child has provided personal information through this Site, please contact us through the Feedback page and we will remove it promptly.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in how the Site works, the providers we rely on, or the law that applies to us. When we do, we will revise the "Last updated" date at the top of this page.
For material changes we will make a reasonable effort to bring them to your attention. Your continued use of the Site after an update takes effect means you accept the revised policy. We encourage you to revisit this page now and then so you always know how your information is handled.
